Module 3 – Target Setting and Climate Action Plan Elaboration, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah – 18-20 July 2019

On the first day of the GCoM training module 3 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Dr. Eleonora La Vullo from the European Union – Joint Research Centre trained up to 40 participants from 15 Malaysian cities to set their emission reduction target to support Malaysia in achieving their NDC. At very least, city is requested to set reduction of 45% similar with Malaysian NDC. Datuk Mahadi, Deputy Mayor of City Kuala Lumpur, one of the GCoM member cities in Malaysia, shared that Kuala Lumpur has set 70% emission reduction in 2030, far above Malaysian NDC.

Appreciation is given to speakers from Europe, Mr. Miljenko Sedlar and Mr. Jon Gastanares, who shared their climate action plan in responding to various issues such as flooding and sustainable energy that has been identified as serious problem in Sabah. Cities are guided step by step on preparation process for the adaptation plan using the example of City Donostia, Spain and City of Zagreb, Croatia.

The event is implemented through the IUC Asia Project funded by the European Union jointly organised with City Penampang, one of the four new Malaysian cities to sign commitment to the GCoM on 20^th July 2019. Other cities will join for the signing are Kampung Bharu, Muar, and Kota Kinabalu.
