As part of the pro-poor and sustainable solid waste management approaches, District Malang has build the waste to energy facility using anaerobic biodigester in traditional market Pujon. This project aimed to convert the organic fraction of municipal solid waste into energy through the process of anaerobic digestion. The IRRC facility will turn the incoming organic waste into compost, biogas and electricity with zero wastewater produced.

The model of IRRC is one of the incentives to ease the waste burden in urban areas while improving local economy, according to the principle of turning waste into resource and the effort to shift the perception of waste from being a constrain to being an opportunity. In addition to environmental benefit, IRRC has also shown economical and social benefits. Furthermore, through the IRRC model, people behavior on the value of waste can be promoted.

 

Malang facts:

  • All 5 biodigesters are fully operational producing @ 84m3 methane/day;
  • Total equivalent electricity produced from the methane is 30,000watt/day;
  • Recovered waste in the form of organic soil fertilizer is 250kg/day;
  • The facility could reduce 100% waste from Mantung Market transported to the city landfill.
