Member Profile – City of Tangerang: Responding to Climate Change through Involvement in GCoM

Mayor of Tangerang, Arief R. Wismansyah signed the GCoM commitment on 17 September 2019. Following the commitment signing, IUC Asia will involve Tangerang City Administration in its programs including capacity building, technical assistance and financing opportunities. In his remarks, he emphasised his confidence that the city’s involvement in GCoM would enable the city to reach its target of GHG reduction and overcome the challenges in responding to the climate change in Indonesia, especially in Tangerang.

The signing ceremony was a special session of the Knowledge Management Forum entitled “Climate Mitigation and Adaptation towards City Resilience” co-hosted by the IUC Asia, GCoM South East Asia Secretariat, Tangerang City Administration and the Local Governments Association of Indonesia (APEKSI) held on 16-17 September 2019.

The city administration has implemented a number of initiatives related to climate change. In 2018, they planted 25,638 trees able to absorb approximately 43,152.35 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. 161 public space had been build around the city. In line with the Central Government, the City of Tangerang also initiated climate-friendly villages around the city that contribute up to 0.2% of the city’s GHG reduction through their waste management facilities.

City of Tangerang is a city in the province of Banten, Indonesia. Located on the western border of Jakarta, it is the third largest urban centre in the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area after Jakarta and Bekasi; the sixth largest city proper in the nation; and the largest city in Banten province. It has an area of 164.5 square kilometres (63.53 square miles) and an official 2010 Census population of 1,798,601, which had risen to 2,043,213 at the 2015 Intermediate Census. The latest official estimate as at mid 2019 is 2,237,006 – making it the eighth most populated suburb in the world at the latter date.
